Volunteers are the backbone of The Sewing Machine Project. Volunteer

The SMP collaborates with community centers in the Madison, WI area, serving center clients with sewing machines and instruction.

Our volunteers staff three local mending sites in Madison, WI, repairing beloved garments and forming community with those we serve.

The Sewing Machine Project shares sets of machines with groups across the nation, offering the tools to help mend communities.

The Sewing Machine Project works with international groups that have connections and resources in place to ship machines from the United States to their service area.
Since our beginnings, every group that receives sewing machines is asked to Pay it Forward in a sewing-related way. Not only does this give our work a "ripple effect", it underscores the notion that everyone has the power to help mend their community.
